I am always surprised
by your ability to surprise me.
Just when I have come to know one layer,
you tear it off,
ready to emerge from your old skin,
and I am left
blinded
as if seeing you for the first time.

Are you changing so fast,
coming closer to the center
as time passes,
peeling off layers as you pass
their boundaries?

A closer look
reveals the old growth
just now exposed,
almost ready to be shed again,
and I know:

it is not yourself
that determines
how close you come to the core
but your trust in me.

As the distance between us grows closer,
you show me only as much
as I'm ready to see.
